Summer Bridge

What is the Math Summer Bridge Program?

The Math Summer Bridge Program is an online program that helps prepare incoming students for Math 1065 (College Algebra), Math 1064 (Applied Mathematics for Business), or Math 2127 (Basic Concepts of Mathematics). Students in this program will register for and use ALEKS. ALEKS is an artificially intelligent assessment and learning system that uses adaptive questioning to determine exactly what a student knows and doesn’t know.

Unfortunately this program can NOT be used to place into any other of our Math courses.

Please consult with your Academic Advisor before purchasing the Summer Bridge Access Package.

What Materials are needed for this Program?

  • ALEKS Summer Bridge Access Package (available for purchase at Dowdy Student Store)
    • Unopened Summer Bridge Access packages can be returned to Dowdy for a refund. Please contact Dowdy Student Store for their return policy
  • A computer/laptop with internet connection
  • ALEKS Class Code

Who Should Participate in this Program?

Any student can self-select to participate in the Math Summer Bridge Program. The program is designed for the following types of incoming students:

A student whose ACT/SAT score placed him/her into Math 0001/Math 0045 but wishes to start in Math 1065, Math 1064, or Math 2127.
A student that needs a fresher in math before taking Math 1065, Math 1064, or Math 2127 at ECU (i.e. a freshman student that did not take a math course during his/her last semester of high school).
A student that struggles with math.

Note: Many majors will accept Math 1050 (Explorations in Mathematics) which requires no minimum ACT/SAT score. Please consult with your Academic Advisor about what gateway math course is required for your major.

Why Should I Participate in this Program?

If you haven’t had a math course in over a semester or if you struggled with math in the past, then participating in this program will give you an opportunity to refresh your math foundational skills and increase your chance of success in your first math course at ECU.

If your ACT/SAT score places you in a math course that does not count towards your major (Math 0001 or Math 0045), then taking a remedial math course will cost you money (tuition & books) and time (may postpone graduation date). Participating in this program will give you an opportunity to self- remediate and then take a placement test to determine if you are now ready for your major required math course (Math 1065, Math 1064, or Math 2127).

Where is the Summer Bridge Program Placement Test Held?

The Summer Bridge Program placement test will be held in the CAVE (located in the basement of Joyner Library). Please read the information under the “Materials Needed for the Placement Test” tab as well as the information under the “Placement Test Requirements” tab for further information about the placement test.
